I did not have a blank disc at the time, so I was unable to make a recovery disk. All I have is the recovery partition and a developer's version of 8.1. That being said I actually have the Windows 8 recovery partition (from the factory) and I have the Windows 8.1 developer preview recovery partition that will restore 8.1. The factory F9 now longer works because the machine is now dual booting Ubuntu 12.04 and Windows 8.1 developer. The factory recovery partition is intact and what I have tried is: 1)Installing and running Asus recovery-I think it is looking for F9 recovery stuff that is not longer there-instead of going to restore from the recovery partition (from the factory-intact) 2)I tried making a recovery usb from within Windows 8.1 but it is using 8.1 files instead of the files from the recovery partition (factory files) Observation: Who could have possibly imagined that having the customer make recovery disks was a good idea? (while I concede that this is a good money making move-it really bends the customer over the proverbial stump) And btw, you no longer get a product key for Windows 8 it is embedded in the recovery partition files-not human viewable from what I have been told by Microsoft and Asus.

Asus recovery partition files have an embedded product key code that Microsoft says they can provide for me, but Asus insists that it is something that Microsoft provides. Mom and dad don't agree on this one I am looking into trying to inject the recovery partition files (factory Asus) into a new install DVD using Microsoft Deployment Toolkit but have never used the toolkit before, it should be Microsoft easy, right? Unless there is an easier method.
